I’ve always found it vaguely disagreeable to look at my reflection in the mirror. A sudden realization of the “self” sometimes results in the collapse between ideals and reality. I subconsciously avoid doing so in public and only let it take place in the comfort of privacy – often in the bedroom, and sometimes in the loo. Since the front camera on my iPhone gave out, mirror selfies had become my only means to replicate and disseminate my self-images virtually; taken privately, mediated by mirrors and smartphone lens distortion, these images frame the way we wish to be seen by romantic or sexual interests, through whom we often grapple our own existentialism with.

"I was walking, and I came to a forest that I had seen somewhere before, maybe on the way into that partial town, and there was this lake and a boat just floating around on it. So I got into the boat. It was tied up, and I untied it a bit and just pulled myself through these trees. It was like a little forest on the edge of the lake. I pulled myself through the water around these trees, and I looked and I saw people, maybe they were naked, standing in front of tents. And I suddenly felt like I shouldn't be there."

Sanitized Bodies begins with a familiar scene – the public restroom. Seemingly a utilitarian site for basic human needs, the restroom is charged with meanings for queer bodies. While the architecture of open urinals and private stalls pushes eroticism to its brim, any meandering gaze can pose threat to a guarded masculinity. Queer bodies are as aroused as they are ridden with anxiety.

Werther multiplies the gestures of fetishism: he kisses the knot of the ribbon Charlotte had given him for his birthday, the letters she sends him (even putting the sand to his lips), the pistol she has touched. From the loved being emanates a power nothing can stop, and which will impregnate everything it comes in contact with.
